Why the surface decides the quality
For stainless steel, the surface is not just a design topic. It determines how well a component can be cleaned, how it reacts to corrosion and how high-quality it looks. An uneven or too-coarse surface holds dirt, a cleanly ground surface is easier to maintain and enhances gloss.
What is needed is a defined, even grinding pattern that meets the requirements for appearance, hygiene and function, and that can be repeated consistently across many parts.
What happens during grinding
In grinding, material is removed with an abrasive of defined grit. Coarse grits level out unevenness and weld seams, finer grits create a more subtle finish. By refining step by step, an even grinding pattern is created whose structure and gloss level can be set deliberately.
The aim is not maximum gloss but control. An experienced surface finisher guides the grits so that the result is reproducible and no visible transitions or grooves remain, which is a demanding task on large surfaces in particular.
Grit and grinding pattern
The grit of the abrasive determines how fine or coarse the grinding pattern turns out. A coarse grit leaves a clearly visible structure, a fine grit a restrained, even pattern. Which grit is right depends on the desired appearance and the function.
Besides the grit, the grinding type plays a role. A directional longitudinal grind looks calm and technical, a cross grind more structured, a vibratory grind non-directional and matt. Each variant has its own character and its own fields of use, from technical application to a visible design surface.
Ra value and reproducibility
The Ra value is the measure of the mean roughness of a surface. It makes the grinding pattern measurable and therefore verifiable. In many industries, for example food and pharmaceutical technology, a certain Ra value is specified, because smoother surfaces are easier to clean and show less adhesion.
What matters is that the required Ra value is achieved not just at one point but across the whole component and the whole series. This is exactly what distinguishes professional grinding from simple reworking. A constant, documentable Ra value gives design and purchasing the certainty that every part meets the requirement.
Grinding types at a glance
Depending on the requirement, different grinding types are used. The longitudinal grind creates a fine, directional pattern. The cross grind combines two directions into a striking structure. The diagonal grind sets a design accent. The vibratory grind creates a non-directional, matt look that softens scratches and fingerprints. The hairline grind delivers a particularly fine, continuous linear pattern for high-quality visible surfaces.
Which variant suits depends on appearance, function and subsequent processing. Because the grinding pattern also forms the basis for later colouring or blasting, it is worth considering the surface from the start.

Yes. Proper grinding with suitable media changes the surface without endangering the corrosion protection. It is important not to introduce extraneous iron. If required, passivation is carried out afterwards.
